This post is for those of you who have been distressed at my thematic grouping of sights in Rome. This was mostly because we walked past many of them multiple times. Possibly more times than Laura would have preferred but at least we had almost enough Gelato. We had a busy time, here is what we did:
Friday night:
Checked into our fancy Monastery hotel.
Walked through the Colosseum, Forum, Capitoline hill,
Stopped in the Gesu church to see the statue, and poked in the Ignazio church to see the cool ceiling.
Went to the Pantheon to see the dome and find delicious fancy gelato
Walked past the church in the National Archives
Saw the Four Rivers fountain and the Octopus fountain
Saw the Altar of Peace and the street of Farraris
Sat in Piazza del Popollo to watch a concert and watch the sun set over Rome. There were thousands of people on bikes. They completely blocked the street.
We stopped in a church on our way back that was hosting something for pilgrims. The quote of the event was when they were asking the people in a tour to go get back on the bus "It's time to leave Jesus" We both thought that was probably a bad plan
Saturday:
Castle of St Angelo and the bridge of the angels
Breakfast in St Peter's square
The Vatican Museum including the Rafael Rooms, Sistine Chapel, and Papal Coach museum
St Peter's Basilica including the Pieta, St Peter's tomb, the treasury, the Dome, Mass, and the Swiss Guard
Watched the sun set over the forum
Sunday:
Toured the Forum, Palantine hill and museum
Toured the Colosseum
Mistakenly went to the Submarine museum and Emmanual Monument
Correctly visited the Capitoline Museum
Visited tons of churches: Stan Maria della Vittoria with the St Teresa by Bernini, San Carlo all Quatr Fontane, Sant Andrea Al Quirinale architecture by Bernini, Sant Pudenziana with a quadruple wedding, Santa Prassede with super old mosaics, Santa Maria Maggiore for Mass
Monday:
Catacombs! No bodies here just a long winding 3 story maze of where they once were
Cappuccini Monks- this is where all the bodies (~3700) went. 5 very small bone chapels
Trevi fountain
San Luigi for the caravagio series on Matthew
Gothic Church- what is that doing in Rome?
Santa Maria del Popolo super old with tons of styles from all the renovations
Piazza del popolo with the bubbles
Circo Massimo
Avenitine hill
Tuesday:
All roads lead to Rome, none lead away. Much like the Hotel California, you can never leave.
There must have been some kind of time warp, because you managed to squeeze 4 weeks worth of sightseeing into 4 days, and still had time left over for gelato. Well done!
