"Is this water sanitary? It looks questionable to me." "Why everything in this city is drinkable my dear children..." Rome is a city of beautiful fountains. Many of the great sculptors designed fountains that one can enjoy while wandering the streets of Rome. Not only are the fountains beautiful, they are quite useful. All water in the fountains is potable. This means when you are spending the entire day walking around, you can fill up your water bottle as often as you wish, often from exciting sources.
The four rivers fountain by Bernini. There is a river from each of the then discovered continents. I am most concerned about the armadillo, he looks like bowser.
Another four rivers fountain. Don't confuse this one with the famous one. While also beautiful this one is much less magestic. It is four separate fountains on the four corners of an intersection. My favorite were the ones with wisteria they just looked so drapey.
The Octopus fountain. This was close to the Four Rivers fountain. It depicts the epic struggle of someone whose friends convince him that an octopus is an excellent place to sit. Clearly, this is a terrible plan. Never sit on an octopus.
The Trevi Fountain by Salvi. It was being renovated while we were there. You are supposed to throw a coin over your shoulder, if it falls in the fountain you will get to come back to Rome. Because the fountain was inaccessible they had put a little pool up for people to throw coins into. There were street people who would walk by and gather up the coins. This raises some questions. If your coin makes it into the fake fountain, do you return to a fake Rome? possibly Las Vegas? If you make it close to the fountain, do you return to some where close to Rome but not the city itself? If some one steals your coin from the fountain, do you end up where they live instead of in Rome?

Those are deep, existential fountain questions.
