Forum

The Roman forum is kind of akin to the DC national mall in that it is a big space that includes many different buildings from all different segments of the government. Looking at the buildings we learned several interesting things about Roman construction. You will remember from the Colosseum that they worked mostly in brick and cement. If you look closely at the plinths you can see that while the outside is neatly stacked the centers of each is just a jumble bricks and brick pieces, not so meticulous after all. Also one of the main things you think about when you think Roman buildings is impressive marble pillars. If you look closely at these pillars of an emperor's private racetrack, yes they have one of those, you will see that the pillars are actually made of brick. The marble is just a vernier! Those sneaky Romans; they are probably the ones responsible for plywood.

Several notable buildings in the forum included:

The arch of Titus. Arches all over Rome remind people of the great accomplishments of various generals and emperors. This one was to celebrate the victory of Titus over Israel. The reliefs show the dramatic victory including them carrying off the treasures from the temple. 

the palace of the Vestal Virgins. These were the ancient Roman version of nuns who had the job of caring for the eternal flame. There were marble statues of all the most famous tenders of the flame. You will notice that one of them is in better shape than the others. 

the ruins of imperial palaces of Palantine hill, yes palantine shares a root with palace, glad you asked. These places had fancy beautiful gardens, statuary, private baths, and of course the private race track. 

the Hogwartsesque House of Griffins and Arch of Severus. Good to know that the ancient Romans were also Harry Potter fans.

aquaducts. Running water is one of the wonderful things brought to us by the Romans. Sure glad we have it now.

Clearly there were many many other exciting buildings on the forum. Some had super ancient hinges, some had fancy pillars or huge roofs. All in all it was mostly picturesque, hot, and ancient. A great was to spend a morning. 

And it had really great sunsets.
