Our last stop in Cologne was the Fragrance Museum. This is the oldest operating perfumerie in the world and the place that developed the original Cologne. We took a tour from a very very enthusiastic lady ready to tell us all about the history of perfume.
An Italian named Farina moved to Cologne and decided to develop a distilled fragrance rather than the heavy oil based ones at the time, like musk. The citrusy sent was a hit and he soon became famous marketing his product as the "water of Cologne." This has since turned into a generic title for smelly liquids. Confusing point of clarification: the original cologne is actually Eau de Perfume not cologne. This is two steps above cologne on the alcohol content=scent long lastiness scale.
