At the end of the conference I set off on a science free adventure. The first step was taking a train down from Pisa to meet Laura in Rome. Our plan was to meet at our hotel and then go out and see some things before going to bed.
Our hotel itself was an adventure. We booked a room in a Monastery. With the decline in numbers of monks and nuns many monasteries and convents have extra space and so pick up some extra money by renting out rooms to tourists. We stayed in the San Gregorio monastery run by Benedictine monks. It had a beautiful baroque facade and was came complete with cloisters. We even got to hear the monks singing in the morning.

Not only was it beautiful and comfortable, It was amazingly convenient. Only a 40 minute walk from any church in Rome and a 2 minute walk from this colossal structure.
It was the perfect way to start off our whirlwind tour of Europe.
