The Ebenezer Baptist Church is the church that Martin Luther King Sr, and Jr were preachers at. The historic church is a maintained by the National Park Service and is right next to Dr. and Mrs. King's grave site, a memorial, and the King Center which has a really nice display on the civil rights movement. On Sunday I went to visit the historic sites and to services in the updated Ebenezer Baptist Church across the street. As is always true of Baptist services, the songs were lots of fun and everyone was very friendly. An added bonus was that in honor of the anniversary of the March on Washington and I have a dream speech, the Reverend
Jesse Jackson was preaching. The Sermon very focused social changes that are needed an how the congregation should be involved in rectifying them. While there was less emphasis on scripture or doctrine than I was used to, it helped me really get a feel for the great force of churches in the civil rights movement and reminded me that true religion has to be concerned both with saving souls and improving lives. We should never wait for heaven for life to be better or more just if we can do something about it today.
